Our dogs stay in the RV while we’re out hiking. At the time of this blog, we had two and the elder one could be left for about 4 hours and the younger for 8, so we had 4 hours to get hiking in. We make sure the day will not be too hot (in case of any electric failure), leave the AC set, leave a fantastic fan open in case we do lose power, and give them treats before we leave.

There are some products out there that can monitor RV temperature so you can make sure your pets stay comfortable for that extra peace of mind too.

We’re planning on going too, but I’m a bit worried about bringing my dog since we’d like to do some of the hikes. What did you do with your dog when you went on the hikes?

Hi! The campground (east side of park) at Pinnacle is quite large so we were able to walk our dog in there for exercise. Unfortunately Pinnacle doesn’t allow dogs on their trails so the only place would be the campground or paved roads.

Since we were in Pinnacles only for a couple of days, the campground area was enough exercise for Opie but if we stayed longer, he would have started getting pretty antsy for longer walks.

We are thinking about going to Pinnacles and have one very active dog. I am worried her not being able to go on the hikes will be an issue. We’re there places to walk around wth your or any enclosed areas you could let your dog off the leash even if for just a bit?

Thanks for any info you can provide!

There were plenty of ground squirrels (which we still refer to as squeasels; see our Pinnacles National Park blog entry for why), chipmunks, and hoary marmots all along the trail. One marmot was chilling out […]

Thanks, Lori! Opie is doing A-OK now, we did have to take him to the vet but he’s full of energy and wearing us out as usual. I have to admit that Opie is a bit puzzled why we keep yanking him away from grass whenever he wants to chew on it now but I don’t think we ever want to go through that again. In the past, Opie actually enjoyed eating grass (only a specific type) and would completely digest it but he would only eat a little bit of it. It was only rarely that he would chomp on grass when he didn’t feel so good. Thanks for the pepto advice, we’ll have to try it next time the dog’s stomach seems a bit unsettled.

hope all is good.
