Three Milestones In The Mirror

The last few weeks have been a been a bit of an emotional roller-coaster, but we now have three more milestones behind us.

#1: Someone’s buying our house!

Our original plan consisted of putting the house on the market, leaving my job, and driving to Florida to purchase our RV. We’d spend a few weeks there shaking out any bugs, and make a leisurely drive back to Virginia over another few weeks, long before the house was sold. Well, that plan had to be scrapped because our house is already under contract! We received two offers shortly after listing the house, accepted one, and we’ve just made it through all the inspection contingencies, so we’re in the home stretch. I don’t think we want to hear the terms “EIFS moisture readings” or “Radon remediation” ever again! Next up is arranging for our friends and family to come to the house and pick up all the furniture and “stuff” they’ve been promised, now that it’s no longer needed for staging.

#2: Our RV is ready!

Although Rover isn’t in our hands yet, he was delivered from the manufacturer in Alabama (Tiffin) to the dealership in Florida (Lazy Days) during the last week of March. He’s all locked up on the dealer’s lot, waiting patiently for us to show up and claim him. I have to admit, I’m disappointed that we aren’t able to go take delivery RIGHT NOW, but having a solid contract on our house earlier than expected is a pretty good excuse. Kathie is taking it in stride better than me, but that’s because she was in charge of getting the house ready for sale while I was busy at work and focusing on RV stuff, so she’s really relieved that the house will soon be completely off her mind. This also gives me more time to put together our pre-delivery inspection (PDI) checklist, so we can be as thorough as possible testing every facet of the RV before making the final purchase.

#3: I’m job-free!

Two weeks ago we signed our house contract, last week our RV was delivered, and this week I turned in my badge and equipment at work. Even though we’re headed off on our grand adventure, it’s sad saying farewell to so many friends and coworkers, some of whom I’ve worked with for over 15  years at multiple companies. Thanks to the Xbox, Facebook, and other media we’ll be able to stay in touch with quite a few friends. Everyone also shared lots of tips and hints on places to visit and restaurants to try in the different parts of the country they’re from. We had a great party, some yummy cake and food, and I got to answer a lot of questions about our RV and upcoming journey.

Now it’s time to turn off the alarm clock (umm, the alarm app on the iPhone) and start living life at a different pace!

After a high-tech career spanning software development and systems administration to leading hundreds of engineers across cities and continents, I'm now slowing things down a bit. Traveling full-time in an RV with my awesome wife Kathie and our two big dogs Max and Opie, I'm now pursuing smaller personal software projects while seeing North America up close.
